The problem with a city that never sleeps is that it can feel intimidating. Our mostly New York-based editorial team can help with that. We recommend seeing the city one neighborhood at a time. Have a cheeseburger at JG Melon after visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side. Spend the morning in the Upper West Side by trying smoked salmon (and maybe sturgeon) at Barney Greengrass and going to the Hayden Planetarium inside the Museum of Natural History. If you have time, make your way downtown to explore the art galleries of Chelsea, and stop by the newly renovated Hotel Chelsea, once home to Jackson Pollock and Bob Dylan, for a cappuccino. Take a break from shopping in SoHo by eating a plate of pasta at St. Ambroeus on Lafayette Street. Make sure to walk through Chinatown and the Lower East Side, where you will find fashionable clothing stores like Bode and popular restaurants like Cervo’s. If you need a break from the Manhattan noise, we recommend heading to Brooklyn Heights. Walk along the Promenade for a wonderful skyline view, have a drink at the Long Island Bar, and shop for homeware at Salter House. If you prefer the calmness of uptown Manhattan, consider staying at the Mark Hotel. If downtown chaos is more up your alley, try the Greenwich Hotel.
