Teresa Margolles was born Culiacán, Mexico, and trained as a forensic pathologist before becoming an artist. Her work reflects her past. She makes art out of the evidence of violence along the U.S.–Mexico border. The rubble of houses abandoned after murders. The water used to wash crime scenes. The clothes of those who have disappeared. The centerpiece of her first large-scale U.S. solo exhibition is La promesa (2012): 22 tons of debris from a home in Ciudad Juárez, from which a family had to flee. Margolles dismantled it brick by brick and rebuilt it in the gallery as a wall. —Elena Clavarino
