Few film series are as immediately appealing as Metrograph’s “The Leaves Are Falling,” a celebration of autumn and its intense tonalities. The program takes in the spectacular New England foliage, a gold-and-crimson setting for several classic films, among them, Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry, Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, and Todd Haynes’s Sirkian Far from Heaven, with Wes Anderson’s Rushmore thrown in for good measure. The films make an irresistible case for fall as cinema’s most resplendent season. —Clara Scholl
