Roy Lichtenstein: Like New

Roy Lichtenstein, Still Life with Crystal Bowl, 1972.

Roy Lichtenstein’s work looked cool, crisp, and machine-made, but it was meticulously done by hand. That tension is at the center of the Whitney’s major retrospective, co-curated by Meg Onli and the artist Alex Da Corte. Around 130 works, spanning the early 1940s through the 1990s, trace Lichtenstein’s fascination with how images are made, copied, and transformed. And for the first time since 1962, the works from his first show at Leo Castelli Gallery will be reunited in one room. In an era of endless cropping, filtering, and reposting, Lichtenstein can seem surprisingly contemporary. —Elena Clavarino
