If you’re not partial to the thick, New York-style burgers served uptown at Burger Joint, you might prefer the rapidly expanding 7th Street Burger chain. We at AIR MAIL, meanwhile, favor George Motz’s smashburger place on West Houston and Macdougal, a charming throwback to the all-American diner. The glossy counter with 15 metal stools wraps around the room, while photographs of diners past and present adorn the walls. Checkered floors and Pop Art-style signs contribute to the cozy atmosphere. And now onto the best part—the burgers. They’re wafer-thin, topped with thick yellow cheese, and served on a satisfyingly soft potato bun. For a bit of adventure, try the George Motz Fried Onion Burger.
