From 1780 to 1830, French society changed. The end of the French Revolution made way for the Restoration, and, increasingly, modernity. Though it is still little know, women at this time fought for the right to artistic training, and began to gain ground on the arts landscape. Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Marguerite Gérard, Marie-Guillemine Benoist, and Constance Mayer are just a few of the women who rose to prominence as artists. In this exhibition, 70 works celebrate both an era of radical change and the perseverance of the females at its forefront. —E.C.
