House of McQueen

The designer Lee Alexander McQueen.

508 W 37th St, New York, NY 10018, United States

A year after Lee Alexander McQueen’s death, in 2010, the fashion industry gave him the grandest farewell it could: the Met Gala. “Savage Beauty,” the title of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, put on display the full scope of the British designer’s visionary work, and the world’s biggest stars ascended the Met’s steps in his creations. Fifteen years later, McQueen’s legacy is honored once again—this time, onstage. Written by Darrah Cloud and directed by Sam Helfrich, the new play traces McQueen’s life from his East London childhood to his rise in the couture. A decade in the making, the production is executive produced by Rick Lazes, with creative direction by McQueen’s nephew Gary James McQueen, who worked for the menswear division of his uncle’s brand for seven years. “We are trying to touch on issues that are relevant to a younger generation, issues like bullying, rejection, homophobia, depression, and even suicide,” says Lazes, “in the hope that this is a healing story.” Luke Newton, the actor best known as Colin in the Netflix series Bridgerton, stars as McQueen. —Jeanne Malle
