We know that Barbie, born in 1959, was a fashion doll, and that her original 22 outfits were influenced by the Paris couture and memorable ensembles from 1958 Hollywood hits like The Best of Everything and A Summer Place. And most of us can’t get enough of Théâtre de la Mode, the ingenius collection of surreal wire dolls that modeled miniature couture creations during the last year of W.W. II. But are there other ways that dolls have influenced fashion? That’s the question that Colleen Hill, senior curator of costume at the Museum at F.I.T., answers in her new exhibition “Doll Dressing.” With over 170 objects on view, the show traces the way dolls have been used in the fashion industry since the 14th century, and then looks at the interplay between dolls, design, and popular culture.
