Shoes are humble markers of society. After all, one must look down on them to pay them any mind. They walk the ground we try not to touch. Shoes were used as political statements in Nazi propaganda. They are also defining symbols of craft and creativity. Beth Levine, known as “America’s First Lady of Shoe Design,” championed their technology during her work at Herbert Levine. She brought mules to the mainstream and designed Nancy Sinatra’s signature footwear for her performances of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.” Presenting ads, posters, and, of course, shoes, this exhibition at the Wolfsonian explores the role footwear plays in fashion, politics, and pop culture. A highlight is a pair of rainbow-colored Ferragamo sandals custom-made for Judy Garland. —Maggie Turner
