“Watching this play is like seeing its author open up her rib cage and show us everything,” the critic Laura Collins-Hughes wrote in The New York Times in 2024.Marin Ireland’s playwrighting debut, Pre-Existing Condition, tells the story of “A,” a woman struggling to recover after leaving an emotionally and physically abusive man. This production has received attention because of the actresses who are taking turns in the lead role. Lupita Nyong’o is currently on board, Phillipa Soo takes over from September 29 to October 17, Susannah Flood from October 18 to November 7, Hari Nef from November 9 to November 28, and Edie Falco from November 30 to December 19. Also formidable is the play’s intimacy and honesty. It takes place in a small venue, where the small audience has no choice but to focus on the cast of four, which includes a therapist, a good friend, and a less good friend who all try to help “A” through her trauma.
