“Watching this play is like seeing its author open up her rib cage and show us everything,” the critic Laura Collins-Hughes wrote in The New York Times. Marin Ireland’s playwrighting debut, Pre-Existing Condition, tells the story of “A,” a woman struggling to recover after leaving an emotionally and physically abusive man. This production has received attention because of the actresses who are taking turns in the lead role. Deirdre O’Connell is currently on board, Tavi Gevinson takes over from July 24 to August 3, and Edie Falco from August 6 to August 23. Also formidable is the play’s intimacy and honesty. It takes place in a small venue, where the audience of 60 has no choice but to focus on the cast of four, which includes a therapist, a good friend, and a less good friend who all try to help “A” through her trauma.
