Many know Real Women Have Curves, the 2002 film based on a play by Josefina López, as the vehicle that launched America Ferrera’s career. The story has now returned as a Broadway musical. With bold costumes and an inspiring book by Joy Huerta, Benjamin Velez, and Lisa Loomer, it’s easy to see why audiences are already on board. Drawn from López’s own diary entries, the story follows Ana García, a teenager in 1980s East Los Angeles. She’s received a scholarship to Columbia University, in New York, yet feels she should stay in L.A., working in her sister’s clothing factory and supporting her undocumented Mexican family. Led by the 25-year-old Tatianna Córdoba, who stars as García, the musical is a tribute to community, womanhood, and body positivity. —Jeanne Malle
