Many know Real Women Have Curves as the 2002 film that launched America Ferrera’s career, adapted from Josefina López’s original play. Now, the story returns—this time as a Broadway musical. With bold costumes and an inspiring book by Joy Huerta, Benjamin Velez, and Lisa Loomer, it’s easy to see why audiences are already on board. Originally drawn from the diary entries of an 18-year-old López, the story follows Ana García, a teenager in 1980s East Los Angeles torn between moving to New York with a scholarship to Columbia University and staying behind to support her undocumented Mexican family by working in her sister’s busy garment factory. Led by the 25-year-old Tatianna Córdoba, who stars as García, the musical is a tribute to community, womanhood, and body positivity. —Jeanne Malle
