Meet Me in Five, running for nine days this September at artXnyc, looks at five junior-year college women who are living together off-campus. Written by Becca Carter Freeman, the play covers a semester of striving, jealousy, parties, rituals, and secrets, dynamics that begin to fray the friendships. Director Emma Garner moves the show between naturalistic dialogue and surreal dance and vocal performances. Meet Me in Five is the work of Cherubs Productions, a femme-led independent production company built around emerging artists. The cast—Shahadi Wright Joseph, Becca Carter Freeman, Isa Barrett, Lilia Buckingham, Emma Garner, and Kaci Walfall—largely grew up together. “It’s a nice melting pot of friend groups,” said Barrett. —Clara Scholl
