Born in Brooklyn in 1951, and after 25 years of drug addiction, Reverend Joyce McDonald began her remarkable journey as an artist. It was 1995, she was 44, and she’d just been diagnosed with HIV. At a treatment program, she says, “They gave me some clay and all these sculptures start coming up”—figurines depicting moments from her past. Since then, she’s become a self-described “testimonial artist,” producing a wide collection of ceramic sculptures, shaped by hand and often depicting intimate scenes of embrace and repose. In addition to being the first institutional exhibition to display McDonald’s sculptures, this show is a celebration of the pastor’s work as an advocate for HIV awareness, civil rights, and society’s most vulnerable. —Charlie St John
