Though bearing the same name as Mike White’s hit HBO series about wealthy vacationers, Alex Katz’s new series of paintings doesn’t have a meaningful connection to the television show. Apparently, Katz, who turns 98 this year, only watched part of one episode. His 11 new paintings depict pairs of beachgoers, drawn from photographs taken by the artist on a beach near his home in Maine, where he has summered since 1954 (the rest of the year is spent in his SoHo loft). In the artist’s signature style, the portraits are cropped closely to the heads of his subjects, leaving the background and the context of the scene up to the viewer’s imagination. The colors—flat blues and yellows—remind us of Katz’s historical significance as a forefather of Pop art. —Paulina Prosnitz
