Whose “Ring”? At the San Diego Symphony, we’re talking Gore Verbinski’s cult horror flick of 2002, starring a VHS tape that reduces a viewer’s life expectancy to seven days, nonnegotiable. A scary premise for sure! But it’s Hans Zimmer’s sly, understated score that provides the subtle killer sauce. On November 1, the conductor Susie Benchasil Seiter synchs the San Diego Symphony Orchestra’s live performance with the moving pictures overhead (can we bring popcorn?). As we go to press, the running order for Chicago Lyric Opera’s symphonic program “Wagner: Myth and Music” remains under wraps. Full disclosure: it’s unlikely to be “Ring”-exclusive. But why should it be? The company’s unflagging commitment to the full Wagner canon is a matter of record. The dynamic British Wagner specialist Alexander Soddy, new to the Lyric, is the conductor, privileged to give the brand-new David W. and Orit K. Carpenter Concert Shell, an acoustic enhancement, its first spin. If all goes as we’re hoping, the sound of voices and instruments will bounce into the Lyric’s overlong shoebox of an auditorium with an immediacy never heard there before. The featured soloist is Christine Goerke, her presence as good as an I.O.U. for Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung to ring down the curtain. —Matthew Gurewitsch
