Rodolfo Abularach is best known for his enigmatic depictions of the human eye, which he believed to be “the window of being.” This exhibition is a window into the larger world of the Guatemalan virtuoso’s work―an eclectic portfolio of hyperrealism, abstraction, and religious allegory. Abularach’s art is cosmic and mystical, qualities he drew from his Central American homeland and heritage. For example, on display are an abundance of works depicting volcanoes, hallmarks of the Guatemalan terrain and of the Popol Vuh, a book sacred to the Quiché Maya people. Accompanied by the publication of the first monograph dedicated to Abularach, this exhibition at David Nolan Gallery invites viewers to discover one of Latin America’s most “globally underrecognized masters.” —Charlie St John
