Roy Lichtenstein: 1997

Roy Lichtenstein, Bellagio Hotel Mural: Still Life with Reclining Nude (Study), 1997.

Sept 5 – Dec 31, 2026
99 Gansevoort St, New York, NY 10014, USA

Roy Lichtenstein died on September 29, 1997, at 73. Works from the last year of his life—prints, drawings, sculptural maquettes—are still rarely exhibited, and his studio contained drawings and collage studies for unrealized projects. These assorted artworks are the subject of “Roy Lichtenstein: 1997,” a focused companion show to the Whitney’s larger “Roy Lichtenstein: Like New,” a retrospective running concurrently on the fifth floor. “1997” includes preparatory work for the nearly 96-foot-long Greene Street Mural and studies for the Bellagio Hotel commission. —Elena Clavarino
