Jasper Johns: Night Driver

May 29 – Oct 12, 2026
Abandoibarra Etorb., 2, 48009 Bilbo, Bizkaia, Spain

The early works of the incomparable Jasper Johns, now 95, are powerfully lodged in retinal memory, so much so that they can eclipse his later work. The flags, the targets, the numbers, the maps—one must reach past them to the decades that followed. This exhibition in Bilbao makes that effort, bringing together approximately 100 artworks spanning seven decades. The show includes the early canvases that broke decisively with Abstract Expressionism, the melancholy paintings of the 1960s, the abstract constructions of the 1970s and 80s, and Johns’s “Catenary” series of the early 2000s. —Elena Clavarino
