“Love me, love me, say you do / Let me fly away with you.” So begins the theme song “Wild is the Wind,” written for the 1957 film of the same name. Composed by Dmitri Tiomkin, with lyrics by Ned Washington, it was sung in the film by Johnny Mathis, and has since accumulated meanings beyond its origins. Nina Simone recorded it in 1966; David Bowie covered it a decade later, stripping it back to its bones. Steve McQueen has been living with both versions for more than 30 years. Now he has made a room out of them. “66–76–26,” conceived specifically for the Guggenheim Bilbao’s architecture, presents the two recordings in the dark, putting Simone and Bowie in a lyric conversation across time. —Elena Clavarino
