As a child recovering from an illness, Aurèlia Muñoz (1926–2011) learned macramé from her aunt. The technique would become central to her career, inspiring large-scale knotted sculptures made from jute and nylon, floating kite-like forms, and installations in handmade paper. The Barcelona-born artist participated in six editions of the Lausanne Biennial, exhibiting alongside Sheila Hicks, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Olga de Amaral, though her work was long considered craft rather than fine art. In the centenary year of Muñoz’s birth, MACBA is presenting the first major retrospective of the artist, organized in collaboration with Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía. —Elena Clavarino
