The Thyssen-Bornemisza family has longstanding ties to the Netherlands, dating back to 1919, when Heinrich Thyssen settled in The Hague. This helps explain why Madrid’s Thyssen museum has such a remarkable collection of Dutch paintings. Now the Thyssen is swapping masterpieces with the Mauritshuis in The Hague, with each lending the other 25 works. Madrid’s visitors can expect still lifes by Pieter Claesz and Adriaen Coorte, interiors by Pieter de Hooch, landscapes by Jacob van Ruisdael, and portraits by Frans Hals and Rembrandt. The star of the show is Vermeer’s View of Delft (c. 1660–61), which gets a room all to itself. —Elena Clavarino
