Welcoming and sophisticated, Madrid is full of traditional and inventive restaurants, fabulous museums, and a lively nightlife. Walking out of a flamenco show at the Corral de la Morería on a warm summer night, you’ll wish you could stay forever. Madrid’s food scene exhibits the city’s energy. To taste as many local delicacies as possible, head to closed markets like the Mercado de San Miguel and the Mercado San Anton; for churros, try the Chocolatería San Ginés; for modern tapas, go to Sala de Despiece and Street XO. Madrid is also home to some of the most beautiful museums in the world. The Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza—all part of the city’s “Golden Triangle of Art”—exhibit impressive collections of Spanish and European art. To get a sense of the city’s history, make sure to walk through the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de España, as well as into the parish church of Santa Barbara. New cultural foundations, like Espacio Solo, are worth a visit. Many hotels have recently opened or reopened—we recommend the newly renovated Rosewood Villa Magna, or the conveniently located Mandarin Oriental.
