Hassan Hajjaj’s pop portraits are not just snapshots of the cultural zeitgeist but homages to his friends and heritage. Born in Larache, Morocco, Hajjaj moved to London at 12, where his adolescence was shaped by the city’s vibrant reggae and club culture. In 1989, he bought a camera from a friend and was hooked. Hajjaj subverts traditional Moroccan stereotypes, blending his Arabic roots and his contemporary multicultural British upbringing. His maximalist portraits have earned him the nickname “Andy Wahlou.” This show in Paris highlights Hajjaj’s diasporic journey and features his portraits of global artists like Billie Eilish and the Indigenous Gnawan musician Maâlem Babohot. “Museums, galleries, ‘culture’ were never in my comfort zone,” Hajjah has said. “Now, after 30 years, it’s great that I can have my friends hanging with me in the museum and people getting high on it.” —Maggie Turner
