Robert Nava: Angels

Feb 25 – Apr 10, 2021
43 Clarkson Street, New York, NY 10014, United States

The Chicago-born artist Robert Nava “makes new myths,” he says, that depict supernatural creatures in electric colors. His style is playful. He blends energetic mark-making with childlike figuration, creating works that seem improvised but are rigorously planned. In this exhibition, Nava explores the archetype of the seraphim, a fabled winged figure that has been circulating since the early 4th century and is the highest ranking angel. Boisterous colors spur space. Layers of acrylic, grease pencil, and spray paint create nebulas of depth. Wings appear on fire. And some seraphs look upon viewers with piercing red eyes. —E.C.
