Born the eldest of seven in an aristocratic family that was posh but not flush, Nancy Mitford wrote what she knew. Her most beloved novel, The Pursuit of Love, was based on her upbringing and then sprinkled with fairy dust. The story of Nancy and her sisters—Pamela, Diana, Unity (infamous for her infatuation with Adolf Hitler), Jessica, and Deborah—is now the subject of a six-episode series, Outrageous. Set during the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe and written by Sarah Williams, the show tracks the Mitford girls through their romantic and political escapades. Nancy, who narrates, is played by the brilliant Bessie Carter, daughter of Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter. About how the show progresses, she tells me, “My jaw just kept getting lower and lower and lower.” —Carolina de Armas
