The name Sargent is well-known in the arts world. John Singer Sargent, whose incisive portraits emerge from settings of Edwardian luxury, is the most prominent of the bunch. His younger sister, Emily Sargent, was less known but over time her works have reached the spotlight. The two had a very close relationship, and often painted watercolors side by side. Mary Newbold Sargent, their mother, took the family on trips around Europe and encouraged her children to be creative. This exhibition features watercolors by these three Sargents—John, Emily, and Mary—and celebrates a recent gift to the Met from the family’s heirs: 26 watercolors by Emily. —Henry McGrath
