Straddling the border of Asia and Europe, Istanbul may be the world’s most cosmopolitan city. The work of one its foremost artists, Selma Gürbüz, is likewise defined by multiculturalism and hybridity. Her oil paintings and intricate ink drawings are rich with the influences of her hometown, where growing up she took in Ottoman miniatures, Byzantine mosaics, and historical mosques and churches. But Gürbüz looks beyond the city limits, finding inspiration in Anatolian, Greek, and even Biblical stories. Her works are at once modern and mythical, maternal and mischievous, combining a distinct style and perspective with a sense of folkloric craftsmanship. This exhibition brings together pieces that span the 35 years of her career. —C.J.F.
