“A good nude photograph can be erotic, but certainly not sentimental or pornographic,” said the British photographer Bill Brandt (1904–1983). A new exhibition at London’s Atlas Gallery showcases his renowned series of beachside nudes. From the coastline of East Sussex to the shores of Southern France, Brandt’s photographs, taken over four decades, are an ode to the female form. Shot with a Superwide Hasselblad camera and Kodak wide-angle lens, Brandt positioned the camera close to his subjects, resulting in striking distortions and elongations of the body. I daresay girls on Instagram still use his flattering technique—which turns the body into art—today. —Carolina de Armas
