William Morris—textile designer, artist, writer, poet—is perhaps best known for revolutionizing Victorian taste. “Few people have shaped the way we live and see art today as profoundly,” writes his biographer Fiona MacCarthy. Morris, who lived from 1834 to 1896, celebrated nature in textile designs of incredible vigor—fruits, blossoms, and birds borne in curvilinear vines and brambles. These complex repeating patterns, which suggest the interdependence of all living things, have since become synonymous with Britishness. This exhibition presents Morris-patterned objects that accompany us out of the house and surprise us within it, from radios to shoes to shopping bags and more. The incomparable Arts and Crafts master continues to shape our lives. —Elena Clavarino
