At 30 years old, Callie Khouri was uninspired and unsure of her career while working on music video sets in Los Angeles. One day while driving, she had the idea of women running from the law to start a new life. She chased the fantasy with a screenplay of her own, was connected to the director Ridley Scott through a mutual friend, and Thelma and Louise was born. Hailed as a feminist classic, the film won Khouri an Oscar and reinvented the male-dominated road trip genre in the process. After years of requests, Khouri has returned to the beloved feminist narrative to adapt it for the stage—as a musical. And it turns out she did not have to make many changes. “It didn’t need much because it’s still a very plausible scenario,” Khouri said of the story, which hinges on sexual assault. Music and lyrics are by the Grammy-nominated Neko Case. Rachel Tucker and Amy Lennox star as the titular pairing. —Maggie Turner
