Cosprop was founded in London in 1965 by the costume designer John Bright, who has spent 60 years dressing some of the most memorable characters in film and television history—Helena Bonham Carter in A Room with a View, Meryl Streep in Out of Africa, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, and Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey. ”Actors walk in with just a script and the name of their character,” Bright has said. “They walk out with that character fully formed in their mind, having brought him or her to life through the angle of a hat, the fabric of a coat or the feel of a pair of shoes.” Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh is now marking the company’s anniversary with an exhibition of costumes, accessories, and sketches that traces the journey from script to screen, accompanied by a richly illustrated book with a foreword by Dame Judi Dench. —Elena Clavarino
