Gwen John (1876–1939) spent most of her adult life in France, painting quiet interiors, solitary women, and nuns in muted tones, achieving a quality of stillness that eluded her brother Augustus, an artist far better known than she was. Rodin’s model and lover from 1904 to 1917, John converted to Catholicism in 1913 and later withdrew almost entirely from the world. Recognition came decades after her death. This exhibition, the largest so far on John, marks her 150th birthday and draws on loans from the Yale Center for British Art, the National Galleries of Scotland, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. These works are rarely seen together, and in some cases rarely seen at all. —Elena Clavarino
