Photography was barely a decade old when expeditions and world travelers began taking it into the field—up into the Alps, across the Middle East, into the distant territories of the Habsburg Empire, and as far as Japan. The Albertina presents a selection of images from its own collection that show how the camera was used as an instrument of exploration and record. Glaciers, ancient ruins, remote landscapes, and foreign cities were subjects of fascination in the second half of the 19th century, and photography was an act of documentation that doubled as wonder. —Elena Clavarino
