An Officer and a Spy, Roman Polanski’s 2019 film about the Alfred Dreyfus affair, which exposed anti-Semitism in fin de siècle France, was a critical hit pretty much everywhere but in the United States. Americans never got a chance to see it because no U.S. distributor was willing to risk running afoul of the #MeToo insurgency that had re-exposed Polanski as a sexual predator. But the film, based on Robert Harris’s novel by the same name, is excellent. The resurgence of anti-Semitism and Polanski’s advanced age (as of August 13, 2025, he’ll be 93) have calmed the waters enough for Film Forum to schedule a two-week run starting August 8. —Alessandra Stanley
