Eli Zabar’s E.A.T is as New York as it gets. At least in my experience: Each summer, returning to the city from France, our home country, my family and I would wake up just after sunrise, roused by jet lag that might have felt punishing if not for this Madison Avenue bakery and restaurant—Zabar’s very first storefront, opened in 1973. We’d set out early, walk 20 blocks down Fifth Avenue, and arrive right as the doors opened at eight. Few things still feel as comforting as ordering a “tower of bagel,” a raspberry-filled crepe, or a warm chocolate croissant in the black-and-white tiled, mirror-lined room. Better yet, the ritual continues next door at E.A.T Gifts, arguably the city’s best toy store. Say hello to Sean Sova, the wonderful salesman who’s worked there for more than 20 years. And don’t forget to ask about the many wrapping-paper colors they offer. —Jeanne Malle
