The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is the first museum devoted entirely to visual storytelling. Its purview is deliberately broad. Prehistoric cave paintings, Norman Rockwell illustrations, Frank Frazetta fantasy art, and Star Wars concept drawings all belong to the same tradition. Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the building rises from a 13-acre campus in Exposition Park, where gardens by Mia Lehrer have replaced a former parking lot. Inside, exhibition space of 100,000 square feet is divided into 30 or so galleries, and the art on view includes works by Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Robert Crumb, Banksy, and Judith F. Baca, whose Great Wall of Los Angeles stretches for half a mile. There is also a free research library containing Joseph Campbell’s annotated books and 3,000 art books donated by Steve Martin; two theaters with continuous screenings; and the rooftop Skywalker Grill. —Elena Clavarino
