Raoul's

The dining room at Raoul’s.

180 Prince St, New York, NY 10012, United States

Started by a pair of Alsatian brothers in the mid-70s, the Prince Street restaurant fed Soho’s art world demimonde in an era when artists and gallerists could still afford to live in the neighborhood. In the intervening years, Soho has lost some of the ramshackle mystique of its After Hours period, but you’ll be glad to know that Raoul’s has only gotten better. Everyone will tell you to get the steak au poivre or the burger, which is sold in limited quantities and only at the bar—the cognoscenti know you can get one without having to fight for it at weekend brunch—but other menu items are equally delicious, the chicken, artichoke in vinaigrette, and frisée salad among them. Off-menu items of note include the fortune teller who occasionally works out of the upstairs, a fish tank, and a large nude that hangs in the back of the dining room (reported to be of Duchess Fergie). And if you just can’t get enough, try Revelie, their new, classic–style luncheonette just across the street. —Nathan King
