Milton Avery’s star has been on a slow yet steady ascendance. Yesterday, a fresh and austerely handsome retrospective on Avery, comprising nearly 70 paintings, opened at London’s Royal Academy of Arts after well-received presentations this past year at Fort Worth’s Modern Art Museum and Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum. I have always been fascinated by people with odd eyes. J.F.K. had a lazy eye, and I think Camila Cabello has one, too, but I’m not sure—she’s fine with or without one. Glasses are just as interesting to me. I started wearing them in my 50s, trying on different frames for new looks, like ties with different-colored shirts. I’ve often painted people, invented them, who have odd eyes, sometimes wearing glasses.
