Milton Avery was a master of color. According to The New York Times, “Only Matisse—to whose art he owed much, of course—produced a greater achievement in this respect.” Avery painted daily life—loved ones, acquaintances, even passersby on the street. He also loved the vast, cold landscapes of East Coast America, Maine’s white sand and the agitated Atlantic. No matter what he drew, he infused the canvas with poetry. This exhibition of 70 paintings, dating from the 1930s to the 60s, includes some of Avery’s most celebrated work. —Elena Clavarino
