Every night a different actor steps onstage. They haven’t read the script, and they don’t know who they’ll be performing with. What they discover is the playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, greeting them from within his own play. Well, sort of. Soleimanpour appears live on a screen from his apartment in Berlin, where he settled in 2015 after years in which he was barred from leaving Iran for refusing compulsory military service. What begins as a conversation quickly morphs into an unpredictable journey through time and space. Soleimanpour gives each performer a glimpse into the hardships and disorientation of immigrant life. Echo premiered in 2024 and now returns to the Royal Court with a new list of actors that includes Dominic West, Daniel Kaluuya, and Milly Alcock. Omar Elerian directs. —Jeanne Malle
