Sonaya Crichlow is only 31 but her career already has a dazzle. She creates intimate portraits of Black women, drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and hip-hop. “I love art history,” Crichlow has said. “I really love how people paint … from the Renaissance to contemporary colors that we have and that they didn’t have.” This exhibition, her first solo show in a museum, is curated by Hilton Als. —Elena Clavarino
