With the premiere of Rosas Danst Rosas, in 1983, the Flemish choreographer Anne Terese de Keersmaeker announced herself as a force to be reckoned with. This all-female quartet was feminist but also femme. It was rigorous in its reiterative structure yet unleashed in its movement. And it was sexy enough that when, decades later, Beyoncé’s people came upon the film version, they couldn’t help snagging a few bits for her music video “Countdown.” When de Keersmaeker found out, she didn’t litigate, she gave Rosas Danst Rosas—or at least a few of its 95 minutes—away. Whoever had a chair and the desire to make something of their own was welcome to the gestural, suggestive steps. Hundreds of imaginative short videos ensued. Now, post-dissemination, what we might call the director’s cut returns. Sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels’ generous dance wing, the tour begins in Paris, then travels throughout Belgium, with a couple of forays into Switzerland. —Apollinaire Scherr
