Jared McGriff, A Bond at the Edge between Solid and Liquid, 2021.

Bringing together 150 works from over 120 artists, a sweeping exhibition at the private museum of Miami businessman Jorge Pérez examines the different ways in which the human condition is rendered through portraiture and figuration. The works on display range from Larry Rivers’s 1965 portrait of Napoleon, titled The Second Greatest Homosexual, to Fernando Sanchez Castillo’s sculpture of the Unknown Protester of Tiananmen Square. Themes range from activism to eroticism: German painter Anselm Kiefer takes on Germany’s complicity in the Holocaust, while Marta Minujin contributes a self-portrait of her nude backside. Works by Willem de Kooning, Giorgio de Chirico, Nan Goldin, and Carrie Mae Weems are also on display in this expansive show. —Paulina Prosnitz
