Kandis Williams: A Surface

Kandis Williams, Triadic Ballet, 2021.

725 Vineland Pl, Minneapolis, MN 55403, United States

When Kandis Williams enrolled as an undergraduate at the Cooper Union School of Art, in 2003, she quickly became disillusioned. Her professors didn’t “get” a Black student who wanted to make art about Black people. Instead, they steered her toward conceptual art. When Williams graduated, in 2009, she began creating the collages, performances, videos, and installations that have since earned her acclaim, many of which explore racial issues and nationalism. “There are so many white lies in the canon,” the artist told Artnet. “The term whitewashing doesn’t even describe it.” This exhibition, the most comprehensive survey of Williams’s career to date, brings together 50 works across various media. —Elena Clavarino
