Who decides the value of a work of art? Critics? History? The market? Yasmina Reza’s Art won the 1998 Tony Award for best play after premiering in Paris in 1994, moving to London in 1996, and arriving on Broadway in 1998. Originally written in French, and translated by Christopher Hampton, the play centers on three longtime friends—Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, a modern art enthusiast, buys an expensive painting. It’s completely white, except for three faint off-white lines. Marc is appalled by the purchase, and his reaction sparks an argument with Serge. Yvan is caught in the middle. Over the course of 100 minutes, their friendships are tested by the artwork. Directed by Scott Ellis, this production stars Neil Patrick Harris, Bobby Cannavale, and James Corden. —Jeanne Malle
