“I discovered the color, texture, structure of the world of fabric,” says the 93-year-old Colombian textile and visual artist, Olga de Amaral. “In a context so rich in possibilities, I learned how to approach that world in a contemporary fashion.” Amaral’s sculptures and installations often combine weaving, knotting, and braiding techniques—references to Colombia’s pre-Hispanic art and indigenous textile traditions—while nodding to Constructivism and Bauhaus Modernism. A new exhibition at the Miami ICA includes everything from the artist’s legendary “Estelas” series (1996–2018)—vibrant gold-leaf works that recall pre-Columbian art—to Amaral’s most recent series, the cloudlike “Brumas” (2013–18), which are suspended from the ceiling. —Carolina de Armas
