Most people know film director Steve McQueen as the man who made 12 Years a Slave and the more recent W.W. II movie Blitz. What you might not know is that McQueen is also a conceptual artist, virtuosic in the medium of film and video installation, and that he received the prestigious Turner Prize in 1999. Twelve years ago, the artist presented a groundbreaking exhibition at the Schaulager. In time for the art fair this year, he’s returned with his most abstract work to date. “What I love about light and sound is that they are both created through movement and fluidity,” he explains. “They can be molded into any shape, like vapor or a scent; they can sneak into any nook and cranny.” —Elena Clavarino
