Irène Zurkinden (1909–1987) entered art school at 16, moved to Paris at 20 with her close friend Meret Oppenheim, and spent the next six decades painting self-portraits, street and circus scenes, and images of her longtime partner, the jazz musician Kurt Fenster, and their two sons. She joined the anti-fascist artists’ collective Gruppe 33 in 1942, designed stage sets for the Stadttheater Basel, and was honored with a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1985. Zurkinden has remained beloved in her home city and largely unknown beyond it. Hauser & Wirth Basel is now presenting a solo exhibition of her paintings and works on paper. Spanning five decades, the show focuses on the artist’s portraits and self-portraits. —Elena Clavarino
