The multidisciplinary artist Rana Begum hails from Bangladesh, where she was born in 1977. Her parents were Muslim, and she remembers diligently reciting passages from the Quran as a child. Begum’s family moved to Britain in 1983, when she was six, and today she considers herself Anglo-Bangladeshi. Attending university in London, Begum studied the work of abstract artists who loved geometry—Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Josef and Anni Albers. Their art was rhythmic, like the religious recitations of her childhood. Begum’s installations, prints, and sculptures draw from those abstract masters but also from the geometries of Islam. For this show, she’s transformed the gallery’s historic staircase with a colorful installation. —Elena Clavarino
