The news cycle is relentless. Stories that held our interest for minutes on end quickly become fading memories. It wasn’t long ago, for instance, that we were captivated by Representative Randy Fine’s proposed “Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act.” According to the Florida Republican’s Web site, “the bill was filed in response to comments from an advisor to Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, who stated that because owning a dog as a pet violates Islamic law, it should be banned.” The offending post was supposedly satirical, yet Fine bravely declared, “In America, we will not allow anyone to tell us that we cannot have dogs.” He later added, injudiciously, “The choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.”
